RECOVERY DAY 1

When I got home I was pretty much a puddle. Totally out of it. Fed the dogs. Which they were happy about, because they had already been fed. Heated up some broth. Took a vicodin. Went to sleep. It was 6pm. In all honesty, I didn't feel that bad. I mean, there was a lot of blood in my nose and my throat, my throat hurt like hell, and I looked pretty bad, but other than that, considering I had my nose professionally cracked open and was under general anesthesia with a tube down my throat, I was doing pretty well. I think I still had quite a large dose of the good drugs in my system from earlier in the day.

It got worse as the night went on. I could feel pain developing in the back of my head and in various parts of my face. I still didn't feel like someone had cracked open my nose though. Interesting.

Sleep was tough, and it didn't help that the dogs were completely stressed out about me being completely stressed out. By 2am I was in some trouble, a lot of blood, not feeling so hot. Heidi was flipping out, and I had to wake Herbie up to help us out, or should I say, help her out.

By morning I was feeling better, but there was still a lot of blood in my nose, and it was drying up. The doctor hadn't packed it, which was good, but in the meantime I was more stuffed than I had been before the procedure. Wasn't expecting that. At 9:00am I called the doctor's office and made my follow up appointment for next week. Then I called him, because on the instructions it looked like it said "Ocean Spray, 10-15 times per day". Turns out there is a nasal spray called "Ocean Spray". Apparently the people at the pharmacy last night didn't know that. We all thought I was supposed to be drinking cranberry juice 10-15 times per day, which made no sense because sinuses have nothing to do with one's urinary tract. Plus, I don't drink juice with any added sugar, because it's BAD FOR YOU!! I finally heard from him at about 3:30pm, and he cleared up the issue with my husband thinking he hadn't called him (turns out the hospital gave him the wrong number and he called some teenage girl...), as well as the issue about the cranberry juice and the excessive stuffiness. "WE BROKE YOUR NOSE, IT'S GOING TO BE A LITTLE SWOLLEN"... Okay, I will accept that as true.

In all fairness, I suppose I need to give myself more than twelve hours to recover. I just want to be back to normal, and now that I am in the home stretch I want to finish the race, as fast as possible. I imagine it will be a few days, so I have to calm down and relax, allow nature to take it's course and healing to take place. Unfortunately calm down and relax are not two words that people put at the top of the list when describing me. Cool, maybe...but not calm or relaxed. (In my dreams cool would be at the top of the list. Dork is more like it).

I decided to go get a pedicure/manicure, thought it would be a low stress activity. First off it must be noted that when I can't drive myself around, I feel constrained. Really trying to be aware of my need to be in control all the time, and maybe try to let that go. That being said, I tend to get a little car sick if I am not driving, so maybe I am overthinking this one.

I made it through the pedicure and had to bail on the rest. Too much for one day. Talk about an entirely new level of appreciation for good health, I never previously thought about the fact that I would have to actually pace myself and make choices about what I can and cannot get done in one day. Usually it's go, and what doesn't get done is merely a byproduct of running out of time in the day, not energy.

Home. It's been a day of up and down. Glimmers of full capacity breathing are invigorating, then massive stuffiness and a bloody throat slow me down. Was able to eat a little tonight, some Tom Yum soup (not the shrimp or the mushrooms) and a few bean thread noodles. Thai people have a way with soup. Whoever decided that fish sauce and lemongrass was a good combination was a genius. Whoever created fish sauce, well, I would like to know the story behind that one.

Taking a Vicodin and an ambien and final nose spray, then trying to sleep. Oyasumi nasai.
